We are carrying just our daypacks.
The main luggage - tents, tables and chairs, food, everything else -
is the porters' business.
They walk fast and overtake the tourists easily. |

|
|
|
A number of steep natural staircases are
to be ascended. It is a challenging gradient but a well trodden path. |

Morning coffee with a view
to Mount Meru.
The staff seems to be amused by providing the highest possible comfort
for the tourists. |

Looking down to the caravan of walkers
and their porters.
About 600 people should be on the path today. |

Shira Hut
The radio unit is operated by solar power.
The rescue equipment is less modern. Note the one-wheel-barrow to the
left of the hut.

Looking from Shira Camp to Klute Peak,
the top of Shira, smallest of the three volcanos of Kilimanjaro, the
others being Mawenzi and Kibo.
The Shira Plateau is the oldest part of the Kilimanjaro massif.
Therefore it is older than Kibo, which originated about 1 million
years ago and erupted last time 10000 years ago.
The dark wooden huts are our privys - the only infrastructure provided
at the camp. |

Trees show the wind's direction.
At 4000m a climate of changing frost prevails. Temperatures range from
-10°c (14°F) in the early morning to 15°c (59°F) in the afternoon. |
